Reading/Writing Discovery
Journalism Back by popular demand! Learn from an actual journalist who will teach the nuts and bolts of the newspaper business. Find those key stories, conduct interviews, document sources, write articles, and research and take notes. The final product will result in your own published newspaper.
Creative Writing Take the ache out of writing and explore your creative side. In this class you will create characters, write plots and dialogue in small group settings, and gain a better understanding through writing workshops and lecture presentations. Work in your choice of poetry, fiction, drama or essay through the creative process. By the end of the class, you will have completed a short story, novel chapter, or a series of poems.
Reading Comprehension The focus of this class is on improving reading skills, comprehension and vocabulary, with lessons on writing, research, test-taking strategies and developing critical thinking skills .Students will work from a variety of resources, including: Reader's Handbook: a Student Guide for Reading and Learning, independent reading, Scholastic Scope
Save The Planet in Six Weeks/Reading and Writing Emphasis This amazing six-week course will teach you everything you need to know about our planet’s needs and how to preserve what we have for the future. The first two weeks will focus on the reading and writing parts of saving our planet. This will include important letter and grant writing in order solicit support from the public, and you will be required to research and document all findings.
Math and Technology Discovery
Math Rewind Many students struggle with math homework and even feel some anxiety when it comes time for math class. Math Rewind is a class that includes information on the importance of math and how practical strategies can help students with homework and tests. Further, learn about different types of math problems, and what to expect at certain grade levels.
Word-Problem Solving Word problems can cause even the strongest math student to waver. Many get stuck while trying to figure out what they're looking to solve. Without knowing what's being asked, students have trouble making sense of all the critical information in the question. This class will take two weeks worth of mathematical word problems and teach you the steps you need to solve them, from simple multiplication to more complex geometry and algebra. Get your math confidence back with this challenging class!
Junior Programmers Learn the inner workings of what it takes to write and build programs. Review basic computer skills and use word processing to create a personal web page. Work with your peers to create and design a project. Create new games and learn about the latest and newest trends in technology.
Save The Planet In Six Weeks/Math & Computer Emphasis The amazing six-week course continues as you use math and computers to help you along with saving the planet. Gather your research and apply it to your project.
Science Discovery
Archeology Learn about fossils and geologic time, as you explore the role of paleontologists in discovering our Earth's history. Simulate a “dig” with your classmates—and work together as research teams to collect information and excavate your site to find bones. Discuss the excavation process as you bring it to completion and reconstruct the bones to form an “ancient” creature. You will then determine the cause of its death, relative size, and a description of its habitat.
General Science Participate in various scientific activities to learn about the process of scientific inquiry. Discuss your experiences and labs and complete Success in Science Journals that you will be able to use throughout the school year. Identify the various steps involved in the experiment (hypothesis, testing, analysis, and conclusion) and challenge yourself to evaluate the reliability of the collected data.
Biology Learn about the basic parts of a microscope and an overview of the proper procedures for using them. Complete labs in our state of the art science room to learn more about the world of biology, including cell structure, cell function, scientific studies, plants, vertebrates, invertebrates and other life science topics.
Save The Planet In Six Weeks/Math & Computer Emphasis Conclude this six-week course with a scientific bang! Focus on ecology, recycling and renewable energy. End the course with a project proposal including writing a grant to Governor Schwarzenegger for funding.
Elective Classes
Rock Band—Led by a professional musician, you will learn everything you need to know about starting your own band, writing your own music and creating your own CD.
Law Enforcement—Learn about the inner workings of law enforcement, taught by a police officer. Understand how the law works, your rights, the penal system, the courts, and overall justice.
Summer Stock—Develop your acting talent through summer stock. Learn what it takes to be a theater actor. Understand all aspects of the theater where everything is LIVE.
Astronomy and More—Explore the beauty of the sky. Discover the constellations as well as the legends behind them. Learn about the stars, gravity, magnets, sound, types of matter, momentum and inertia, solar system, and space. Conclude the course with a field trip to Chabot Space and Science Center.
